Joe Biden Diagnosed with Stress Fracture

In December by Talar Medical

You may have seen in recent news that President-elect Joe Biden has fractured his foot while playing with his German Sheppard, Major.  The next day he visited his orthopedist, who didn’t see the fracture initially on x-ray, but discovered a tiny fracture on two small bones in the middle of his foot after reviewing a CT scan.  While the health of our future president is everyone’s concern, a hairline fracture such as this, is actually quite common. So, what exactly is a hairline fracture? A hairline fracture or a stress fracture is a tiny crack in the bone.  This type of injury usually occurs in the bones of foot and lower leg from repetitive jumping or running.  However, it can also occur, as in the case with Joe Biden, as a result of an injury.  It has been reported that President-elect Biden had not one, but who tiny fractures “mid-foot.”  …

What does obesity have to do with Podiatric Medicine?

In February by 11Studios1 Comment

It is that time of the year where everyone goes from sedentary to athlete, overnight. Resolutions are outstanding and we certainly are advocates of healthy, active lifestyles but we need to remind our communities (and ourselves) that feet might not be ready to take the pounding from treadmill and gym time. Depending on your demographic, a lot of your patients might be advanced in age or illness and a good way to bring in more revenue to your practice is to broaden your demographic so that you and your staff can develop a patient base that will stay with you and allow you to manage all their foot care needs for years to come. Plus, it is an opportunity to educate patients and practice preventative medicine! Metatarsalgia, is a condition which affects all ages, but because it is commonly caused by intense training, it runs rampant this time of year. While …

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization & Plantar Fasciitis

In May by Talar MedicalLeave a Comment

By Luke Ferdinands, Founder of Alleviate and Inventor of the Arch Massager Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (abbreviated to IASTM, commonly known as “Graston Technique” after the brand that has dominated the space) is gaining popularity in the US as a treatment modality for tendinopathies and other soft tissue ailments.  In my home country of New Zealand, it’s been taught and used for decades.  In fact, for most of my 18 year career I’ve used specially designed steel tools to treat both acute and chronic presentations of tissue dysfunctions – notably Plantar Fasciitis and Fasciosis. My clinical experience tells me that it delivers patients an immediate “ah-ha” moment in the clinic and measurable pain and function improvement with continued application, even in the most stubborn recalcitrant presentations of PF.  So the patient feels better right now, keeps getting better with each treatment, and it’s completely non-invasive.  There is published research backing …

In May by Talar MedicalLeave a Comment

In the United States, over a million people are diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. This is an ailment that affects the heel and arch of the foot. It’s caused by pressure on the plantar fascia (a thick band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes) from activities like running or walking for long periods. This pressure can cause the tissue to become inflamed and lead to heel pain. Many products claim to treat plantar fasciitis, but not all of them are effective. Talar Medical has the best products to treat this condition and help you get back on your patients get back on their feet. Spring is just around the corner, which means that many patients will be coming in to have their foot fungus treated. Whether it be Fungal toenails or Athlete’s Foot, both conditions can be a source of embarrassment for patients and can often lead to complications if left untreated. Luckily, several treatments are available that can help get rid of the fungus and improve the appearance of the nails and skin. This blog post will discuss two popular treatments we provide to physicians to help treat their fungal patients. What is Onychomycosis? Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails. It can cause the nails to become thick, brittle, and discolored. In extreme cases, onychomycosis can lead to infections in the skin and underlying tissues. Fungal onychomycosis is most often caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes. These fungi can invade the nails and skin because they can break …

Simple strategies to prevent Achilles tendon rupture.

In November by 11StudiosLeave a Comment

It is that time of year again to educate our weekend warriors:DO NOT ignore the signs and symptoms of a tight Achilles tendon or Achilles tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon!!). This condition affects our patients year round, but basketball season tends to send those weekend athletes into our practices in droves. The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the heel bone in the back of the leg and when the calf muscles flex, like they do when we run, jump, or stand on our toes, the Achilles tendon pulls on the heel. Tightness of the Achilles tendon puts you at risk of injuring or even rupturing this tendon. The key to prevent Achilles tendon rupture is implementing a few simple strategies into your playing time. Remember, full time athletes train hard to play hard. We don’t expect you to spend hours in the gym training for a few hours …

Cam Newton has football fans asking what a Lisfranc sprain is and what the prognosis looks like.

In November by 11Studios1 Comment

Cam Newton is out of the game for the rest of the season and his injury has made Lisfranc sprains a household phrase. Podiatric Physicians know how tricky it can be to diagnose and treat a lisfranc sprain and there are a lot of different schools of thought as to the best course of action. What we all agree on, is that it is imperative for our athletes to take this injury seriously and not try to push through it. For sports fans to better understand what happened to Cam, here is an over view from Dr. Stephen Corey, DPM. The Lisfranc joint is the point at which the metatarsal bones (long bones leading up to the toes and ball of foot) and the tarsal bones (bones in the arch) connect in the middle of the foot. These two bones are joined by a tough band of tissue, called the …
